The people this atlas exists to describe: monarchs and statesmen, generals and revolutionaries, philosophers, explorers, reformers and the rest of the roster who acted on the historical stage rather than merely lived through it. Placement within this band follows the role a figure is chiefly remembered for, one of thirteen role bands from Monarchs and Rulers to Indigenous Leaders and Resistance Figures, not the era a figure lived in; a figure's own era is recorded separately, as a relationship, not as this band's grouping.
