Figures whose primary historical significance is campaigning for a social, legal or civil change, such as suffrage, abolition, civil rights or humanitarian reform, chiefly through organizing, advocacy or protest, plus single-incident uprising leaders whose action was a stand against an unjust condition rather than a sustained armed movement. Belongs here: suffragists, abolitionists, civil-rights leaders, humanitarian reformers, and popular-revolt leaders such as a peasant or slave uprising. Does not belong here: leaders of sustained armed independence movements, grouped under Revolutionaries and Independence Leaders, or figures who held elected office as their primary historical role, grouped under Statesmen and Political Leaders.
