Figures whose primary historical significance is a voyage, expedition or overland journey of discovery or contact carried out chiefly through exploration rather than governance or conventional warfare. Belongs here: navigators, overland travelers, and conquest-era expedition leaders remembered chiefly for the journey and its consequences. Does not belong here: figures whose later governance of the territory they reached became their primary historical role, or campaigners whose expeditions were conventional land warfare rather than exploration, grouped under Military Leaders and Commanders.
