The Six-Day War was fought from 5 to 10 June 1967 between Israel and a coalition of Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq, after weeks of rising tension in which Egypt had expelled United Nations peacekeepers from Sinai and closed the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping. Israel opened the war with a surprise strike that destroyed most of the Egyptian air force on the ground, and in six days of fighting captured the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria, roughly tripling the territory under its control. The scale and speed of the Israeli victory transformed the regional balance of power and set the borders and grievances that have shaped Arab-Israeli diplomacy and conflict ever since.
