Israel, officially the State of Israel, is a country in the Southern Levant region of West Asia, bordered by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt. Israel declared independence as the British Mandate ended on 14 May 1948, followed by an invasion by Arab states; the 1949 armistice expanded Israel beyond the UN partition plan while no new Arab state was created. Israel's Basic Laws establish the Knesset as a proportionally elected parliament, and the country's territorial control and treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza remains the subject of ongoing international dispute, described in its own sources as including allegations of apartheid and genocide that Israel and its allies deny.
