The Knights Templar were a Catholic military religious order founded in 1119 by the French knight Hugues de Payens, who proposed a monastic order to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem after the First Crusade. The order grew into one of the wealthiest and most powerful institutions of medieval Christendom, developing an early form of international banking to move pilgrims' funds safely across Europe and the Crusader states, and fielding a formidable fighting force in the Crusades. Deeply in debt to the order and eager to seize its wealth, King Philip IV of France orchestrated the arrest of its members on charges of heresy in 1307; Pope Clement V formally dissolved the order at the Council of Vienne in 1312 with the bull Vox in excelso.
