The Knights Hospitaller, or Order of St. John, was formally established when Pope Paschal II issued the bull Pie postulatio voluntatis on 15 February 1113, recognizing a religious community already caring for sick and poor pilgrims in Jerusalem. The order militarized over the twelfth century to help defend the Crusader states, relocating its base after the fall of the Crusader states first to Rhodes and later to Malta, from which its principal successor, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, is still known. Unlike the Knights Templar, the order was never formally dissolved, and five organizations today continue its traditions and mutually recognize one another, chief among them the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, headquartered in Rome.
