Tecumseh (c. 1768-1813) was a Shawnee chief and warrior who led a broad movement of Native American resistance to United States expansion into tribal lands in the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region. A skilled orator, he traveled extensively among many different Native nations to build a pan-tribal confederacy capable of resisting American settlement, working alongside his brother Tenskwatawa, a religious leader known as the Prophet. During the War of 1812 he allied his confederacy with British forces against the United States, and was killed in 1813 at the Battle of the Thames, after which his confederacy collapsed. He remains a celebrated figure in American, Canadian and Indigenous history.
