Suryavarman II (reigned 1113-1150 CE) was a king of the Khmer Empire, centered in present-day Cambodia, remembered chiefly as the builder of Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. Dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, the temple complex was constructed as both a state temple and, ultimately, Suryavarman's own funerary monument, showcasing the architectural and artistic achievement of the Khmer Empire at its height. His reign also saw extensive military campaigns against neighboring kingdoms, including Champa and Dai Viet, and a restoration of strong centralized government, leading historians to rank him among the greatest rulers in Khmer history.
