Sulayman of Mali

Sulayman, commonly known as Mansa Sulayman, was ruler of the Mali Empire in West Africa from approximately 1341 to 1360, succeeding his brother, the famous Mansa Musa. His reign is documented largely through the account of the traveller Ibn Battuta, who visited the Mali court around 1352 and described a well-ordered kingdom with an elaborate court ceremony, though Ibn Battuta was notably critical of Sulayman's comparative stinginess toward visitors when set against the legendary generosity of his predecessor Mansa Musa. Despite this criticism, Sulayman is generally regarded by historians as an effective administrator who maintained the empire's stability and territorial extent during a period of continued prosperity for Mali.
