Sejong the Great

Sejong the Great (1397-1450) was the fourth king of Korea's Joseon dynasty, reigning from 1418 until his death, and is widely regarded as the most accomplished ruler in Korean history. His reign is best known for his sponsorship of the creation of Hangul, the Korean phonetic alphabet, introduced in 1443-44 to give ordinary Koreans, who had previously relied on Chinese characters, a simple and accessible writing system for their own spoken language. Beyond this linguistic achievement, Sejong also promoted advances in science and technology, including rain gauges and astronomical instruments, reformed the tax and legal systems, and expanded Korea's northern borders, leaving a legacy still celebrated in Korea today.
