Pedro I (1798-1834) was the founder and first ruler of the Empire of Brazil, reigning from 1822 to 1831, and briefly King of Portugal in 1826. Born a prince of the Portuguese royal House of Braganza, he remained in Brazil when his father returned to Portugal after the Napoleonic Wars, and in 1822 declared Brazilian independence from Portugal, becoming known in Brazil as the Liberator. His reign was marked by conflict with the Brazilian parliament and unpopular wars, and in 1831 he abdicated the Brazilian throne in favor of his infant son to return to Europe, where he fought to secure the Portuguese throne for his daughter.
