Minamoto no Yoritomo

Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147-1199) was a Japanese warlord who founded the Kamakura shogunate, Japan's first military government, and became its first shogun in 1192. He led the Minamoto clan to victory over the rival Taira clan in the Genpei War of 1180-1185, a conflict that reshaped Japanese politics for centuries. Rather than ruling directly through the imperial court in Kyoto, he established a separate military government based in Kamakura, delegating loyal vassals as land stewards and constables across the country, a structure that placed real political and military power in the hands of the warrior class rather than the emperor. This shogunal system he founded, in various forms, governed Japan for nearly seven centuries after his death.
