Idris Alooma (c. 1580-1617) was Mai, or ruler, of the Kanem-Bornu Empire in the Lake Chad basin of Central Africa, widely regarded as the empire's most significant leader. He carried out major military reforms, including the introduction of firearms and the use of Ottoman and North African military advisors, which he used to expand and consolidate control over the empire's territory and secure its trade routes across the Sahara. He also promoted Islamic law and administration more thoroughly through his realm, strengthening ties with other Muslim states in North Africa and the Middle East. Much of what is known about his reign comes from a chronicle written by his court scribe, Ahmad ibn Fartuwa, which provides an unusually detailed contemporary account of his military campaigns and governance.
