The Great Chinese Famine was a famine that occurred between 1959 and 1961 in the People's Republic of China, with some scholars also counting 1958 or 1962 within it. It is widely regarded as the deadliest famine and one of the greatest man made disasters in human history. Estimates of the death toll from starvation are contested, ranging from the tens of millions overall, with newer estimates concentrated around 30 to 46 million excess deaths. The provinces of Anhui, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou and Hunan were the most severely affected.
