Falklands War

The Falklands War was a ten-week conflict fought from 2 April to 14 June 1982 between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands and the dependencies of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic, after Argentina's military government invaded the British-administered islands to bolster its domestic standing amid economic crisis. Britain, under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, dispatched a naval task force across roughly eight thousand miles of ocean to retake the islands, and after seventy-four days of fighting at sea, in the air and on land, Argentine forces surrendered on 14 June 1982. The war confirmed British sovereignty over the islands and precipitated the collapse of Argentina's military junta the following year, while cementing Thatcher's political standing at home.
