The Space Age

The Space Age is the historical period, generally dated from the Soviet Union's launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite on October 4, 1957, characterized by the beginning of human activity in outer space and rapid advances in rocketry, satellite technology and space exploration. The period's earliest years were shaped directly by Cold War competition between the United States and the Soviet Union, from Yuri Gagarin's first human spaceflight in 1961 through the American Apollo program's Moon landings, beginning with Apollo 11 in July 1969. Beyond crewed exploration, the Space Age brought practical satellite technology into everyday life, including global communications, weather forecasting, navigation and reconnaissance, and it produced enduring international cooperation structures such as the International Space Station, continuously crewed since 2000. The period continues into the present, increasingly shaped by private commercial spaceflight companies alongside national space agencies.
