The Ottonian Period, 919 to 1024, was the era of the Ottonian dynasty's rule over the eastern Frankish kingdom and, from 962, the revived Holy Roman Empire, founded when Henry the Fowler was elected King of Germany and consolidated by his son Otto I, crowned emperor in Rome after his decisive victory over the Magyars at the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. Ottonian rulers built a close alliance between crown and church, appointing bishops as loyal administrators in a system historians call the Imperial Church, and the period saw a genuine cultural revival in art, architecture and manuscript illumination known as the Ottonian Renaissance. The dynasty ended with the death of the childless Henry II in 1024, passing imperial rule to the Salian dynasty.
