The United States of America is a federal republic primarily located in North America, consisting of 50 states and a federal capital district, Washington, D.C. Beginning with the 1607 settlement of Virginia, British colonization established the Thirteen Colonies, whose clashes with the British Crown over taxation sparked the American Revolution. The July 2, 1776 Lee Resolution formally declared independence from Great Britain, and the Declaration of Independence was adopted two days later. Victory in the 1775-1783 Revolutionary War brought international recognition of United States sovereignty, and the country's economy has been the world's largest since about 1890.
