Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam, is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy in mainland Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, with Bangkok as its capital and largest city. Siam was the only country in Southeast Asia to avoid colonization by European powers during the era of Western imperialism in Asia, though it ceded territory and trade rights through unequal treaties. The Siamese revolution of 1932 transformed the country from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy and the country was renamed Thailand; it operates today under its 2017 constitution, with Vajiralongkorn, Rama X, as monarch and Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister. With a population of about 66 million across roughly 513,115 square kilometers, Thailand is the second largest economy in Southeast Asia and holds significant geopolitical importance as a newly industrialized developing country.
