Tanzania

Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a country in East Africa's Great Lakes region bordered by Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a population of around 67.5 million, the most populous African country located entirely south of the equator. The mainland fell under German control in the late nineteenth century before transitioning to British rule after the First World War; independence came in the early 1960s, and the mainland Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. The country is home to Mount Kilimanjaro and three African Great Lakes, and its population comprises about 120 ethnic, linguistic and religious groups, predominantly Christian, with Swahili as the national language among more than 100 languages spoken. Tanzania is a presidential constitutional republic with its official capital at Government City, Dodoma, though Dar es Salaam remains the largest city and commercial hub, and safari tourism represents a major economic activity.
