Slovenia is a country in Central Europe bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, with a short Adriatic coastline of 46.6 kilometers and Ljubljana as its capital and largest city, situated near the country's geographic center. The territory passed through Roman, Holy Roman, Habsburg and Austro-Hungarian rule before joining the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918 and later becoming part of Yugoslavia. Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia on 25 June 1991 and, after the brief Ten-Day War, became an independent sovereign state under the Brioni Agreement signed 7 July 1991, adopting its current constitution on 24 December 1991. It operates as a unitary parliamentary republic, and with a 2025 population of about 2.1 million across 20,272 square kilometers, Slovenia is roughly 78 percent Christian, mostly Catholic, and uses the euro as its currency.
