Russia, or the Russian Federation, is a country in Eastern Europe and North Asia and the largest country in the world by area. In 1991 the Russian SFSR emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union as the Russian Federation, and following a constitutional crisis in 1993 a new constitution was adopted, establishing a semi-presidential republic. Russia retains, as the successor state of the Soviet Union, a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
