Wallachia is a geographical region of modern-day Romania, as well as one of the two historical Romanian principalities that laid the foundation for the establishment of the modern Romanian state. Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, ruled it as voivode from 1456 to 1462, fiercely resisting Ottoman rule.
