Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a country in South Asia bordering India, Afghanistan, Iran and China. Spurred by the Pakistan Movement, which sought a homeland for the Muslims of British India, Pakistan gained independence in 1947 after the partition of British India, accompanied by unparalleled mass migration and loss of life; East Pakistan seceded as the new country of Bangladesh in 1971 after a nine-month civil war.
