Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious country in South Asia, lying between the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and India on its other sides, with Kathmandu as its capital and largest city. Situated mainly in the Himalayas, it contains eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest. Prithvi Narayan Shah began unifying the kingdom in 1768, conquering the Kathmandu Valley the following year, and the hereditary Rana dynasty ruled Nepal from 1846 to 1951; parliamentary democracy introduced in 1951 was twice suspended, in 1960 and 2005, and a civil war from 1996 to 2006 killed more than 16,000 people. Nepal became a federal republic on 28 May 2008, ending its long status as the world's only Hindu kingdom, and now operates as a federal parliamentary republic under the constitution adopted on 20 September 2015.
