Jordan, officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, lies in the Southern Levant region of West Asia, bordered by Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Palestine, with Amman as its capital and largest city. The ruling Hashemite dynasty descends from Sharif Hussein of Mecca, who led the 1916 Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule; Britain recognized the Emirate of Transjordan's independence through the 1946 Treaty of London, and Abdullah I became the kingdom's first monarch after full independence was declared on 25 May 1946. Jordan operates as a unitary parliamentary semi-constitutional monarchy, in which the king holds wide executive and legislative powers, with a bicameral parliament made up of a Senate and House of Representatives. With a 2023 population of about 11.5 million across 89,342 square kilometers, Jordan has hosted large refugee populations since 1948, including some 2.1 million Palestinian and 1.4 million Syrian refugees as of 2015, and its population is about 95 percent Sunni Muslim.
