Japan is an island country in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of the Asian mainland, comprising four major islands alongside over 14,000 smaller islands. Between the 4th and 6th centuries its kingdoms were united under an emperor, and after rule by successive shogunates Japan was unified in 1600 by the Tokugawa shogunate; the Meiji Restoration of 1868 ended the shogunate and restored imperial power, and after defeat in World War II Japan came under Allied occupation until 1952. Japan is a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislature known as the National Diet.
