India, officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia, bounded by the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, and bordering Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. In 1947 the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two independent dominions, a Hindu-majority dominion of India and a Muslim-majority dominion of Pakistan, accompanied by large-scale loss of life and unprecedented migration. Since 1950 India has been a federal republic governed through a democratic parliamentary system, and its population grew from 361 million in 1951 to over 1.4 billion in 2023.

Start YearThe lead names two real, distinct founding dates: independence and partition in 1947, and the start of the federal republic in 1950, since when India has been a federal republic. Recorded here as 1947, the independence date, with 1950 named as the alternate rather than silently dropped. Sources
