Grenada is an archipelagic country of the eastern Caribbean in the West Indies, the southernmost of the Windward Islands roughly 100 miles north of Trinidad, comprising the main island along with Carriacou, Petite Martinique and several smaller islands and covering 344 square kilometers. St. George's is the capital of a country whose 2024 population was estimated at 114,621, known as the Island of Spice for its nutmeg and mace production. Indigenous Kalinago people inhabited Grenada before Christopher Columbus sighted it in 1498; French colonization began in 1649, bringing about 127,600 enslaved Africans between 1669 and 1808, and Britain took control in 1763. Grenada gained independence on 7 February 1974 under Eric Gairy; a Marxist-Leninist coup in 1979 installed Maurice Bishop, who was executed in 1983, prompting a United States-led invasion. Grenada is a unitary constitutional monarchy with King Charles III as head of state, represented locally by a governor-general, and a prime minister holding executive power.
