The French First Republic governed France from 1792 to 1804, founded on 21 September 1792 when deputies of the National Convention unanimously voted to abolish the constitutional monarchy. Governed from Paris under the motto liberte, egalite, fraternite, the republic controlled France proper alongside a network of sister republics and occupied territories, and briefly held Louisiana as part of the French colonial empire from 1800 to 1803. Its population was about 29 million in 1800, and the republic fought nearly continuous war against the rest of Europe from 1792 to 1802 while passing through several distinct governmental forms, including the National Convention, the Directory and the Consulate. The First Republic ended on 18 May 1804, when the Senat conservateur proclaimed Napoleon Bonaparte Emperor of the French, establishing the First French Empire in its place.
