France, officially the French Republic, is a country primarily located in Western Europe, with overseas regions and territories including French Guiana, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, the French West Indies, and islands in Oceania and the Indian Ocean. The current Fifth Republic, a semi-presidential system, was formed in 1958 by Charles de Gaulle, following the earlier Bourbon Restoration, French Second Republic, Second French Empire, French Third Republic and short-lived Fourth Republic. France is a great power and one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
