The Comoros is an archipelagic country of three islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli, in Southeast Africa at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, covering 1,659 square kilometers, the third-smallest African country by area. Moroni is its capital and largest city, and the population was estimated at about 944,388 in 2026, among the most densely populated in the world; Islam is the official state religion, practiced by 99.6 percent of residents, and Comorian, French and Arabic are the three official languages. Comoros declared independence from France on 6 July 1975 and has since experienced more than 20 coups or attempted coups, with several heads of state assassinated. Comoros is a federal presidential republic, with the president serving as both head of state and head of government under a multi-party system; it is the only member of the Arab League located entirely in the Southern Hemisphere, and also belongs to the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Indian Ocean Commission.
