China, officially the People's Republic of China, is a country in East Asia and the world's second-most populous country. In 1949 the Chinese Communist Party proclaimed the People's Republic of China, while the Republic of China government retreated to Taiwan; both sides still claim political legitimacy. The reform and opening-up that began in 1978 moved China towards a socialist market economy, spurring economic growth, and China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
