Bangladesh is a unitary parliamentary republic in South Asia following the Westminster system, with Dhaka as its capital, largest city and political, financial and cultural center, and Chittagong as its second largest city and busiest port. The territory endured nearly two centuries of British colonial rule beginning with the 1757 Battle of Plassey, was partitioned from British India in 1947 to become East Pakistan, and won independence from Pakistan on 16 December 1971 after a nine month liberation war. With approximately 177.8 million people across 148,461 square kilometers, it is the eighth most populous country in the world and one of the most densely populated, at about 1,165 people per square kilometer. Bengali is the official language and the population is about 91 percent Muslim and 8 percent Hindu; Bangladesh is South Asia's second largest economy and one of the largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping, and it hosts over a million Rohingya refugees alongside the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest.
