Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. British colonisation began in 1788 with the establishment of the penal colony of New South Wales, and by the mid-19th century five additional self-governing British colonies had been established. The colonies federated in 1901, forming the Commonwealth of Australia, continuing a process of increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom that culminated in the Australia Act 1986.
Facts
Start YearThe lead also names the Australia Act 1986 as the culmination of increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom; 1901 is recorded here as the federation date the lead itself names as forming the Commonwealth of Australia, with 1986 as a further, later constitutional milestone rather than a competing founding date.
