The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty established on 14 May 1955 by the Soviet Union and seven other Eastern European states, formed directly in response to the integration of West Germany into NATO earlier that month. It served through the Cold War as the Eastern Bloc's military counterpart to NATO, coordinating the armed forces of its member states under effective Soviet leadership, and its troops intervened to crush reform movements within its own bloc, most notably in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968. As Soviet-aligned governments across Eastern Europe collapsed at the end of the Cold War, the Pact was formally disbanded on 25 February 1991.
