The Teutonic Order is a Catholic religious institution founded as a military society around 1190 in Acre, established to support German-speaking Christian pilgrims and to provide hospital care in the Holy Land during the Crusades. It went on to conquer and rule a state of its own along the Baltic coast, converting and administering the peoples of Prussia and Livonia through the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The order's military and territorial role ended in 1810, after which it continued, and continues today, as a purely religious and charitable Catholic organization headquartered in Vienna.

Dissolved1809 is the year Napoleon secularized the Teutonic Order's remaining German territorial state, ending it as a political and military power. This is not the end of the Teutonic Order itself: the religious order survived the loss of its state and continues today as a Roman Catholic institute based in Vienna, now devoted chiefly to charitable and hospital work rather than knighthood or territorial rule.
