The Society of Jesus, whose members are known as Jesuits, was founded in 1540 by Ignatius of Loyola and six companions, with the approval of Pope Paul III, for what its founding document describes as the defence and propagation of the faith and the progress of souls in Christian life and doctrine. The order became a leading force in the Catholic Church's Counter-Reformation, building an extensive network of schools and universities and sending missionaries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Political pressure from several European monarchies led Pope Clement XIV to suppress the order in 1773; the Church lifted the suppression in 1814, and the order remains headquartered in Rome today.
