The Fugger family built one of the great banking and merchant houses of Renaissance Europe from their base in Augsburg, rising to prominence under Jakob Fugger, born in 1459 and known as Jakob the Rich, who built the family's fortune on international banking and a near monopoly on European copper trading, alongside major Tyrolean silver and Hungarian copper mining interests. The house financed the Habsburg dynasty, including the enormous bribes that secured Charles V's election as Holy Roman Emperor in 1519, making it one of the most politically influential banking houses of its age, comparable in Europe to the Medici Bank a century earlier.
