The Communist International, known as the Comintern, was founded at a congress of revolutionaries in Moscow from 2 to 6 March 1919, with the mission of building a world party of communist parties dedicated to overthrowing capitalism and spreading proletarian revolution internationally. Directed from Moscow, it coordinated and directed Communist parties across the world, chiefly in the interests of Soviet foreign policy, until Joseph Stalin dissolved it on 15 May 1943 as a wartime gesture to his Western allies.
