The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom, established in 1694 to act as the English government's banker and manage its war debt during the Nine Years' War against France. Headquartered on Threadneedle Street in the City of London, it was privately owned until nationalization in 1946 and gained operational independence to set interest rates in 1997. It remains one of the world's oldest continuously operating central banks and a model that later central banks, including the Federal Reserve, drew on.
