Winston Churchill was a British statesman who served as prime minister from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. As First Lord of the Admiralty before and during the First World War he authorized the Gallipoli campaign of 1915, a costly failure that temporarily damaged his political career. He became prime minister in May 1940 and led Britain through the Second World War, becoming a symbol of national resistance to Nazi Germany. Beyond politics he was a prolific writer and historian, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his wartime memoirs.
