Pachacuti

Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, also called Pachacutec, was the ninth Sapa Inca of the Chiefdom of Cusco, which he transformed into the Inca Empire (Tawantinsuyu). During his reign Cusco grew from a small town into an empire that overtook the rival Chimu empire on the northern coast. Coming to power following the Chanka-Inca War, he conquered territories around Lake Titicaca in the south, the eastern slopes of the Andes near the Amazon in the east, and lands up to the Quito basin in the north, beginning an era of conquest that within three generations expanded Inca dominion across a sizeable part of western South America. Most archaeologists now believe the site of Machu Picchu was built as an estate for Pachacuti.
