Louis V of France

Louis V, known as Louis the Lazy, was a king of West Francia from 979, when he began co-reigning with his father Lothair, until his own early death in 987. He ruled in his own right only from 986, and during that brief independent reign actual power rested largely with the nobility rather than with the king himself. Louis V died childless in 987, making him the last Carolingian monarch to rule West Francia, and his death opened the way for Hugh Capet's election as king and the start of the Capetian dynasty.
