The Second Crusade (1147 to 1149) was the second major crusade launched from Europe, called in response to the fall of the County of Edessa in 1144 to the Seljuk forces of Zengi. It was announced by Pope Eugene III and led in the east by the European kings Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany. Crusading efforts succeeded in Iberia, where several territories, including Lisbon, later the capital of the Portuguese Empire, were taken from Muslim rule, but the eastern campaign in the Levant achieved little of lasting value.
